Dr. Jacqueline Montanaro

Jacqueline Montanaro studied Medical Laboratory Science at RMIT University, Melbourne Australia (B.App. Sci) and then completed her Applied Masters Degree in Microbiology and Biotechnology, also at RMIT, with thesis on ‘PCR detection of Toxoplasmosis gondii’. These studies were completed when concurrently working in clinical laboratories at Royal Melbourne Hospital (EM lab, Pathology Dept) and Royal Childrens’ Hospital, Melbourne (Virology Lab, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Microbiology (CIDM)), and then Westmead Hospital, NSW (CIDM, Molecular Microbiology). Finally, she decided to combine her love of both electron microscopy and microbiology in a research career.

She did her PhD in medicine from University of Sydney, Australia, doing work investigating the ‘Epidemiology and virulence factors of Legionella longbeachae’.

Later, she worked in Dept. of Microbial Ecology, University of Vienna, using electron microscopy to study symbiotic environmental Chlamydiae in amoebae. Jacquie joined the group of group of Prof. Talin Barisani-Asenbauer at the Laura Bassi Center of Excellence – OCUVAC at the Medical University Vienna in 2010. Her main focus is working on visualizing chlamydia or different antigen carriers in in vitro models using electron microscopy methods.
